Clarkson in the Community: Improve I-70 KC Team Hosts Camp NAWIC
June 12, 2026
Clarkson recently welcomed educators from across the Kansas City region as part of the National Institute of Construction Excellence (NICE) Summer Educator Externship, providing an inside look at the many career opportunities available in the heavy civil construction industry.
The day began at Clarkson's Crossroads office, where participants learned about the wide range of career paths available in construction, from field operations and project management to engineering, safety, quality control, estimating, communications, and the skilled trades. The group also received an overview of the Improve I-70 Kansas City project before gearing up in PPE for a guided tour of the active jobsite.
A highlight of the visit was hearing directly from three of Clarkson's summer interns, who joined the tour to share their experiences working in the industry: Emily Reams (University of Arkansas), Kasper Nemeth (Kansas State University, and Philip Lester (University of Missouri - Columbia).

The interns discussed the projects they've contributed to throughout the summer, what they've learned while working alongside experienced professionals, and offered advice for the educators to bring back to students who may be considering a career in construction. Their firsthand perspectives helped demonstrate the variety of opportunities available and the value of gaining real-world experience early in a career.
Clarkson is proud to support workforce development initiatives and to partner with organizations like NICE to introduce the next generation to rewarding careers in construction.
