Connecting Kansas City Students with Careers in the Skilled Trades
August 11, 2026
Clarkson Construction Vice President, Aaron Shimmel, P.E., recently joined engineering students from across the country for the Construction Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers' Student Days, sharing his industry experience while connecting with the next generation of construction professionals.
The annual program brings together top engineering students and construction industry professionals for networking, professional development, and a hands-on competition designed around the realities of delivering construction projects.
As part of the event, Aaron presented to students about estimating and the critical role it plays throughout the construction industry. His presentation explored how contractors develop estimates, why accurating estimating matters, and how the process ultimately influences a company's ability to pursue and win work.

Students had an opportunity to put many of those concepts into practice through the Student Days Competition. Participants developed a bid package for a real-world construction project, including a cost estimate and project schedule, before presenting their proposals to construction professionals. Aaron also participated in networking activites throughout the event, meeting students from colleges and universities across the country and answering questions about careers in construction.
We appreciate the Construction Institute of ASCE for the opportunity to participate and for continuing to create meaningful connections between students and industry professionals! We loved meeting so many talented future engineers and construction professionals and hope to see some of them on Clarkson project teams in the years ahead.
