The nationally award-winning Turner Diagonal Project transformed the
I-70 and Turner Diagonal Parkway interchange into a state-of-the-art diverging diamond interchange. This innovative project was a collaborative effort between the Kansas Turnpike Authority, Kansas Department of Transportation, and Unified Government of Wyandotte County & Kansas City, Kansas.
Completed on time in Fall 2020, key improvements included:
- Enhanced access to approximately 300 acres of land, unlocking potential for economic development
- Reduced annual maintenance requirements at the interchange
- Increased pedestrian accessibility and connectivity
Additional features of the project included the construction of a new truck staging facility, complete with upgraded pavement, and a Kansas Highway Patrol inspection station west of the interchange.
Delivered through a fast-track design-build process, the project showcased the seamless collaboration of designers and contractors from the outset. This approach enabled:
- Faster project delivery within a ten-month schedule from notice-to-proceed to completion
- More efficient use of materials
- Lower labor costs
- Enhanced overall project efficiency
