Four of the five major projects in the reconstruction of the Grandview Triangle were awarded to Clarkson Construction Company for $204 million. The Grandview Triangle is the intersection of I-435, I-470 and U.S. 71 in Kansas City, Missouri. Over 250,000 vehicles pass through this confluence of highways every day.
Several large concrete and steel bridges were built on these projects. These bridges required over 35,000 cubic yards of concrete, 32,000,000 pounds of structural steel, 7,000,000 pounds of reinforcing steel and 50,000 feet of H-pile. Retaining walls totaling 142,000 square feet were also constructed. In addition to the work for MoDOT, Clarkson built a new railroad bridge spanning U.S. 71 for Kansas City Southern Railroad.
The grading portions of these projects required over 3,000,000 cubic yards of earth and rock excavation. The paving included 485,000 square yards of 10″ and 14″ concrete as well as 52,000 tons of asphalt.
Clarkson completed Phase I nearly a year ahead of schedule and successfully completed Phases II, IV and V early, earning maximum incentives.
