The Kansas City International Airport (MCI) New Terminal Project was a transformative $1.5 billion investment that replaced the outdated three-terminal layout with a streamlined, passenger-friendly facility designed for modern travel. At more than one million square feet, this is the single largest infrastructure project in Kansas City's history, and a multi-award-winning example of innovation, collaboration, and community impact.
Project Highlights
- 40 Gates
- All-Glass Passenger Boarding Bridges
- New 6,200-Space Parking Garage
- State-of-the-Art Passenger Amenities
- Largest One Percent for Art Program Ever Completed
- Comprehensive Landside and Airside Civil Improvements
Delivered ahead of schedule and on budget in February 2023, the New Terminal was developed by Edgemoor Infrastructure & Real Estate and constructed by the Clark | Weitz | Clarkson joint venture. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the terminal features an H-shaped layout with two levels, intuitive wayfinding, and open sightlines that create a seamless experience from parking to gates.
Through intentional procurement strategies, the project awarded more than $320 million in contracts to 133 Kansas City-based minority- and women-owned firms. Participation goals were exceeded in every tracked category, including:
- Construction Services: 25.4% MBE / 18.7% WBE
- Professional Services: 20.5% MBE / 16.4% WBE
In addition to the joint venture, Clarkson Construction played a key role in the delivery of the terminal's elevated split-level roadway system, landside civil improvements, and extensive airside work, including the construction of taxiway aprons and tie-ins to existing taxiways:
- 39,000 square feet of airfield taxiway
- 80,000 square yards of light-duty PCC pavement section
- 9,900 square yards of VSR PCC pavement section
- 16,000 square yards of shoulder PCC pavement section
