Clarkson’s project in Liberty, Missouri, made several improvements to the interchange of I-35 and Highway 291 which included re-configuring the ramps at I-35 as well as the intersection with Church Road. The work included: reconstructing new pavement and a new bridge over I-35 on Highway 291, and adding lanes on Highway 291 and Church Road.
A total of 90,000 cubic yards of earth and rock were excavated, 53,000 square yards of new concrete pavement was poured and the Highway 291 Bridge over I-35 was removed and replaced. The Highway 291 corridor provides access to numerous local residents and business, as well as a school and a hospital. This project was completed while maintaining at least one of traffic on Highway 291 for the duration of the project. This was also one of the Missouri Department of Transportation’s first projects requiring the implementation of a Quality Management Plan, making the Contractor responsible for Quality and Document Control for all items of work completed on the project.
The total project completion carried an $18,000 per day penalty. The project was completed on time and on budget. Clarkson Construction Company was general contractor and self-performed all grading, concrete paving and bridge construction for this $10.6 million project.
