Clarkson Awarded for 18th Street Bridge Project

Clarkson Construction Company was recently awarded the Kansas Contractors Association /KDOT Partnering Award in District 1 for their work on the 18th Street Bridge - located on US-69 over the Kansas River.

The project began in April 2018 with a full bridge closure and reopened in late November 2018, three weeks ahead of schedule. Clarkson completed structural repairs on all lower chords, diagonals, gusset plates, and miscellaneous bracing.

The bridge repairs included:

92 of the 138 bottom cords fixed

30,000 rivets

25,000 bolt holes drilled

60,000 bolts were installed

Because of these efforts, an additional 10 years of life was added to the bridge.

The contract and project was unique because HDR, the designer, was on the job site daily actively finding and designing additional repairs requested by KDOT. The partnership between Clarkson, HDR and KDOT, allowed the project to be completed in one season.
