Clarkson Construction, in joint venture with Radmacher Brothers Excavation, is delivering the Missouri Department of Transportation's Improve I-70 Kansas City Design-Build project, a major reconstruction of one of the region's busiest transportation corridors.
The project spans I-70 from The Paseo Boulevard to U.S. 40/31st Street and includes extensive roadway, bridge, and multi-modal improvements. Working within a constrained urban environment, the Clarkson-Radmacher team is coordinating complex construction operations while maintaining mobility through the corridor.
A defining element of the project is an 11-month closure of I-70 between downtown Kansas City and the stadiums in 2027. The closure will allow crews to safely and efficiently complete significant mainline roadway and bridge construction while reducing prolonged exposure to live traffic and accelerating the overall construction schedule.
Project Improvements
- Add a fourth eastbound I-70 through lane from Prospect Avenue to the Manchester Avenue bridge
- Replace 15 bridges and rehabilitate seven additional bridges
- Reconstruct I-70 from Chestnut Avenue to 18th Street, including improvements through the Benton Curve
- Reconstruct eastbound I-70 through the Jackson Curve and complete westbound improvements near Jackson Avenue
- Complete additional ramp, roadway, and safety improvements throughout the corridor
- Improve pedestrian and bicycle connectivity
- Complete major portions of interstate and bridge construction during an 11-month full closure in 2027
Construction began in Spring 2025 and is scheduled for completion in 2028. Through innovative design-build delivery, the project is maximizing available funding to deliver extensive infrastructure improvements that will improve safety, reliability, and connectivity along this critical Kansas City corridor.

Through jobsite tours, classroom visits, STEM activities, career events, and partnerships with local schools and community organizations, the team is creating opportunities for students and community members to learn more about the project, the people building it, and the wide range of careers available in the industry.
