I-635 & I-70 Interchange

I-635 and I-70 intersect in the heart of Kansas City, Kansas. Over 180,000 vehicles pass through this interchange daily. This project required Clarkson Construction to rebuild the interchange and one-mile portions of I-635 and I-70 in all four directions from the interchange. The project was awarded for $82 million; however, $15 million of additional bridge work was added to the contract during construction and the project was completed as originally scheduled. The added work involved re-decking the I-635 bridges over the BNSF Hump Yard and totaled 364,000 square feet.

Twenty-three concrete and steel girder bridges were involved in the contract. Thirteen of the bridges were removed and replaced, nine were rehabilitated and one new bridge was added. Of the nine that were rehabilitated, two spanned the Kansas River and two spanned the BNSF Argentine Hump Yard. In all, they required over 23,000 cubic yards of concrete, 4,530,000 pounds of structural steel and 8,100,000 pounds of reinforcing steel. Over five miles of new concrete barrier was constructed on the bridges.

The grading portion of the project involved 630,000 cubic yards of earth and rock excavation. The paving included 400,000 square yards of twelve and thirteen inch concrete as well as 20,000 tons of asphalt.
